How to Protect a Rolex From Scratches: 8 Practical Steps

A Rolex is built to be worn, but Oystersteel, gold and polished centre links still mark. The good news is that most scratches come from a short list of situations you can control. Here is where the damage actually happens, and eight things that prevent it.

Where Rolex scratches really come from

  • The desk. Resting your wrist on a desk or laptop edge marks the clasp and the case flank facing the table.
  • Doorframes and car doors. A single knock leaves a deep mark on a lug or bezel edge.
  • Cuffs and sleeves. Constant fabric friction slowly dulls brushed surfaces and polished centre links.
  • Bracelet-on-bracelet contact. Wearing a watch with a metal bracelet or bangle on the same wrist.
  • Storage and travel. Airport trays, watch rolls, safes and winders.

1. Know which surfaces are vulnerable

Polished surfaces show hairlines first: the case flanks of a Daytona, the centre links of a Jubilee, the polished chamfers on a Day-Date. Brushed surfaces do not scratch as visibly, but they lose their grain and start to shine. Both matter for resale.

2. Change hands, not habits

If you write and type all day, wearing the watch on your non-dominant wrist and pushing the sleeve over the clasp removes a surprising amount of contact.

3. Stop metal-on-metal stacking

A bracelet worn next to the watch is one of the fastest ways to damage both. If you stack, put a protective layer between them or move the bracelet to the other wrist.

4. Take it off for the obvious jobs

Gym sessions, DIY, gardening and moving boxes cause damage that no film can prevent. This is the cheapest rule on the list.

5. Clean the bracelet properly

Sweat, dust and lotion collect between links and act as a mild abrasive, and they also accelerate bracelet stretch. Warm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft brush every few weeks is enough for a screw-down case; dry it thoroughly afterwards.

6. Store it so it cannot move

One watch per slot in a roll or box. Loose watches in a drawer or a bag knock against each other and against keys, and that is where the deepest marks usually come from.

7. Apply a precision-cut protection film

This is the only measure that protects the watch while you are wearing it. FINX Optical Transparent Film is an ultra-thin patented film cut for the exact Rolex reference, covering case, bracelet and clasp. Contact marks land on the film instead of the metal, light hairlines on the film fade with body heat, and the film peels off cleanly when you sell or service the watch.

8. Think twice before polishing

Polishing removes scratches by removing metal. Each polish softens the sharp edges and blurs the line between brushed and polished areas, and collectors pay less for a watch that has lost its factory geometry. Protecting early is cheaper than restoring later, and once a bevel is rounded it cannot be put back.

Rolex protection kits by model

Most Rolex kits are US$150 and are available for over 160 references, including Daytona, GMT-Master II, Submariner, Datejust, Day-Date, Oyster Perpetual, Sky-Dweller and Yacht-Master. See the full Rolex protection film collection.

FAQ

Does Oystersteel scratch easily?

904L steel is corrosion resistant and holds a polish well, but it is not scratch proof. Polished sections mark as easily as on any other steel watch.

Will protection film void my Rolex guarantee?

The film sits on the outside of the case and does not modify the watch. Remove it before sending the watch to an official service centre. More detail: does protection film void a Rolex warranty?

Can existing scratches be hidden by film?

Film can make very light hairlines less visible, but it does not remove them. Deep scratches remain visible under the film.

Where can I have it installed?

At our stores in Bangkok (Central Embassy), Singapore (Far East Plaza) and Shanghai, or you can fit the kit yourself.
